CQB how to take a corner or slice the pie

One of the most important aspects of tactical maneuvering is how to correctly negotiate corners, or how to slice the pie.  This is most often thought of in context with performing CQB – but how to correctly negotiate corners reaches into our lives FAR more than CQB will, if ever.  First of all, what is CQB?  CQB stands for “Close Quarters Battle” and was coined by the British armed forces after WWII.  The term came to notoriety worldwide after the 22nd SAS successfully took back the Iranian embassy in London in 1980.  In the USA it has become synonymous with “door kicking and room clearing”, but the true nature of the term is much broader than that.

Who should learn CQB type cornering techniques?

How to approach corners is important for the home owner, if they must go to ensure the safety of a child or loved one if they think they have an intruder in the home.  How to approach and negotiate corners is important for those whom are experiencing an “active shooter” at a mall, school, place of business or some other setting when trying to leave or avoid the shooter.  How to approach and successfully negotiate corners is extremely important for the CCW holder, should they decide to try and stop an active shooter situation. How to approach corners is important for anyone that is on foot in a urban environment, especially at night.  In other words, the proper way to negotiate corners should be important to nearly everyone, whether or not you carry concealed (CCW).  It is also noteworthy that these techniques are utilized just as easily if you have a handgun or a carbine (or rifle).  I must also point out that this article is not about blowing doors, throwing in flash bang grenades and filling the room with a bunch of guys in black with MP5 submachineguns.  This article is for virtually everyone else that carries a gun, or keeps a gun for home defense, or just wants to avoid problems at night in the city or even a parking lot.

What does CQB cornering have to do with slicing pies?

Slicing the pie is another phrase that it used in CQB terminology to illustrate how you should use corners to your advantage.  It is another way explain the concept is “working the angles”.  The basic premise is to show the absolute least amount of your body while trying to see as much of your enemy as you can.
