Day 4 – 14 days to be a better shooter

DAY 4

Day 4 is all about Type 1 malfunction clearance drills.  Type 1 stoppage is when one of two things exist.

Magazine not properly seated

On nearly every magazine fed firearm I am aware of, it is possible to either not seat the magazine far enough, or to seat it improperly.

Dead round in the chamber

The other cause for a Type 1 malfunction is a dead round in the chamber, i.e. a round that the firing has struck, but still didn’t go off.

Immediate Action

It doesn’t really matter what the cause of the Type 1 malfunction is, as the Immediate Action is the same.

Day 4 – Immediate Action – Handgun

With the handgun, when you get a “click” instead of a “bang”, you immediatly take action and bring it closer to you (in the same place that we Load and Unload).  Then you ATTACK THE MAG.  You hit it firmly to ensure it is seated properly.  Then you ATTACK THE SLIDE.  Grasp the back portion of the slide (ensure you don’t cover the ejection port) and pull it back sharply.  Keep your hand moving rearward so that it comes off the slide and hits your shoulder.  This way you will make sure that the slide goes all the way back, and more importantly all the way forward without your hand slowing it down at all.

Day 4

Attack the mag!

Aim in on the target and fire.

Do this 10 ~ 20 times while watching your hands perform the motions.  This will help your brain learn the motions.

Then do it blindfolded 10 ~ 20 times.  This will really help your brain learn the motions.

After this, do it 10 ~ 20 times more, without the blindfold, but without looking directly at your firearm.

Day 4 – Immediate Action – AR15 series

The cause for the Type 1 in an AR are the exact causes as with the handgun.  The Immediate Action is nearly the same (exact same in principle).  When you get the click instead of the bang, bring the carbine back near you so you have better control of it holding only with one hand.  Push the magazine up into the well, and then pull it down. (It you are able to pull the magazine out, it wasn’t seated properly and you need to seat it properly.)  Then rack the charging handle all the way to the rear of its travel and let it go.  Reaquire the target, and deliver shots as necessary.

Do 10 while watching.

Do 10 while blindfolded.

Do 10 without the blindfold but don’t watch.

Day 4 – Immediate Action – AK series

The principles are the same across all kinds of magazine fed firearms.  Either the magazine was inproperly seated, or there is a dead round in the chamber.  So we must ensure that the mag is seated properly and switch out rounds in the chamber.  With the AK, we do a rearward hit on the mag.  If it comes free, it was improperly seated.  So…we seat it properly, and then rack the charging handle and re-aquire the target and attempt to fire.

Do 10 while watching.

Do 10 while blindfolded.

Do 10 without the blindfold but don’t watch.

A video of this whole process is located HERE.

That is the end of day 4 – stay tuned for Day 5!  If you have any questions, please ask them below.
